The blotting paper test
- Put a small drop of oil on plain white blotting or filter paper.
- Leave it undisturbed for about twenty four hours.
- Look at the paper.
Little to no visible mark is right; a persistent greasy stain points to mineral oil. Rice bran oil also carries oryzanol, a compound largely specific to it, but confirming that needs a laboratory rather than a kitchen. Worth asking about if you are ever buying loose or unbranded.

How to use it
With a high smoke point and a light texture that does not dominate a dish's flavour, this oil is a versatile everyday choice for sauteing, deep frying, and baking, wherever a neutral background oil is preferred over one with a distinct character of its own.
The flavour is light and largely neutral, with only a faint nutty note in the background, making it noticeably milder than mustard or groundnut oil and closer to an easy, all purpose cooking oil.
